A number of factors can influence network performance:
Bandwidth - is the main factor affecting network performance. Bandwidth is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), and the higher the bandwidth, the faster data can be transfered.
Latency - is the time delay between the moment that transmission of the first byte or packet of communication begins, and when it is received as its destination. It is a function of the time it takes for the information to travel at the speed of light from the source to destination. When satellite links are involved, distances of more than 100,00 km are involved and you can sometimes see the result on live TV when a presenter in a studio talks to a reporter at a distant location.
Errors in transmission - due to noise or distortion mean that the data has to be retransmitted.
Signal sharing - the number of nodes connected and transmitting data.
